Infertility

Infertility affects approximately one in six people of reproductive age globally, with both male and female factors contributing to its prevalence. There are several causes of Infertility in couples. The Male and female causes are to be evaluated separately. Some known causes are as below-

Female Infertility

  1. Ovulation Disorders: Conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid imbalances, and premature ovarian insufficiency can disrupt the release of eggs, leading to infertility .
  2. Fallopian Tube Blockage: Infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), often resulting from untreated sexually transmitted infections, can cause scarring and blockages in the fallopian tubes .Tuberculosis can lead to fallopian tube blockages
  3. Uterine Conditions: Fibroids, polyps, or structural abnormalities in the uterus can interfere with implantation or increase the risk of miscarriage

  5. Age-Related Factors: As women age, the quantity and quality of eggs decline, reducing fertility and increasing the risk of miscarriage .

Male Infertility

  1. Sperm Production Issues: Conditions like varicocele, infections, or hormonal imbalances can affect sperm count and quality .
  2. Ejaculatory Problems: Obstructions or dysfunctions can prevent sperm from being ejaculated properly.
  3. Environmental and Lifestyle Factors: Exposure to toxins, excessive heat (e.g., from hot tubs), smoking, and heavy alcohol use can impair sperm production .
  4. Medical Treatments: Chemotherapy or radiation therapy can damage sperm-producing cells .
